The Abidjan airport , also called Felix Houphouet Boigny Airport or Port Bouet Airport , the largest airport in the West African nation of Côte d'Ivoire . It is located about 16 kilometers southeast of the largest city on the Ivory Coast, Abidjan , in the Port-Bouët district . In 2003 about 773,000 passengers were counted.
General
Abidjan Airport has a runway with a length of 3000 meters. In contrast to many other African airports, the equipment at the airport is of European standard. The airport has two terminals, one for domestic and one for international flights. 25 check-in counters are available for check-in. The airport building also houses a post office, a bank as well as a few restaurants and cafes. Several taxis are stationed in front of the airport to transport travelers to the capital. An ILS approach is possible.
Airlines
International air traffic plays a major role at Abidjan Airport. Many leading airlines, such as Air France and Brussels Airlines , offer destinations across Europe . There are also flights to the North African countries and the Middle East . In addition, several African airlines have a seat in Abidjan, which transport passengers to Ghana or South Africa, for example .
Incidents
From 1977 to October 2017, there were 8 total aircraft losses at Abidjan Airport and its vicinity. 250 people were killed. Selection:
- On January 3, 1987, the flight crew of a Boeing 707-379C ( aircraft registration number PP-VJK ) of VARIG returned on the way to Rio de Janeiro twenty minutes after take-off from Abidjan airport due to a fire warning on one of the engines and switched off the engine. On the approach to the airport in the moonless night there was spatial disorientation, stall and loss of control. The plane crashed 18 kilometers northeast of the field and went up in flames. Of the 12 crew members and 39 passengers, only one survived (see also VARIG flight 797 ) .
- On January 30, 2000, an Airbus A310-300 operated by Kenya Airways (5Y-BEN) crashed into the sea shortly after taking off from Abidjan. 169 of the 179 occupants were killed (see also Kenya Airways flight 431 ) .
- On October 14, 2017, an Antonov An-26 of the Moldovan Valan International Cargo Charter (ER-AVB) chartered by the French armed forces had an accident on the final approach in poor weather conditions . The machine from Ouagadougou ( Burkina Faso ) hit the sea about 650 meters from the threshold and broke into several parts. Four of the ten occupants, including both pilots, were killed in the crash.
