Open-Sankoré is free software for interactive whiteboards that is compatible with almost all available digital boards and projectors and the associated remote controls, as well as tablets. OpenBoard is a fork of Open-Sankoré and has been developed by the service écoles-médias of the Canton of Geneva since 2014 .

history

The name Open-Sankoré was chosen to commemorate the historic Sankoré University in Timbuktu , which was a center of education in the Islamic world in the early modern period.

Open-Sankoré is based on the Uniboard software , which was developed at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). The software was used there by the university's teaching staff since 2003 and was later outsourced to a local startup company (Mnemis SA). In 2010, at the instigation of the French government, the non-profit interest group for digital education in Africa (GIP ENA) acquired all rights to the software in order to publish it under an open source license (GPL 3) under the name Open-Sankoré . The French initiative aims to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals . The French government offers the software for this in various programs in African countries in connection with computers and video projectors. That is why DIENA was founded. Since 2011, state treaties have been concluded with Mauritius, Haiti, Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso and hundreds of corresponding classes have been set up. Since April 2013, up to 160 schools in and around Brussels have been equipped with new hardware and open source software, with Open-Sankoré being part of the software package. In 2013 the GIP ENA was dissolved.

The source code of Open-Sankoré was last changed in January 2015.

OpenBoard

Since September 2014 there has been a fork of the project with OpenBoard based on Open-Sankoré 2.0, OpenBoard is being developed by the Geneva Education Administration. This simplified version is supposed to work better on Mac OS X. A beta version of OpenBoard 1.3 has been available since March 2016, the final version of OpenBoard 1.3 is planned for April 2016.

Innovations

In addition to the fact that Open-Sankoré is the first free and open source interactive software for interactive whiteboards, the program brings two innovations to the market: On the one hand, the file format used is not a binary format, but is based on the W3C web standards , so it is in current Can be viewed easily by web browsers . Created content can thus be distributed or published online without the user having to install software or a plug-in. On the other hand, the software can be expanded with apps that can be programmed according to the W3C widget standard. This allows the main developers of Open-Sankoré to concentrate on the core components, while the community can easily develop a variety of small apps that are adapted to the specific needs.

service

The operating concept is based on intuitive and efficient usability. In particular, it should also be aimed at teachers, schoolchildren and students who have no special technical knowledge. Any type of document can be inserted into the program (text, images, Flash animations, videos). All content can also be provided with comments. Another important part of the program is the opportunity to share learning content with others and to adopt or improve third-party content. This can be done, among other things, via the Planète Sankoré website , on which existing (currently mostly French-language) content can be exchanged.

languages

The program is currently available in the following languages: Arabic, Basque, Bulgarian, Chinese (traditional), Chinese (simplified), Danish, German, English, French, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Catalan, Korean, Corsican, Malagasy, Dutch , Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romansh, Romanian, Russian, Swedish, Slovak, Spanish and Turkish.
