Kamailio (pronounced: "Kama · ilio", formerly OpenSER ) is an adaptable free server software for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) ( RFC 3261 ), which takes on the role of an exchange in IP telephony . The aim of the project is to develop a robust and scalable SIP server.

Kamailio can be used flexibly - from embedded systems such as DSL routers to large installations with several million users at Internet service providers . Among other things, it is used by the VoIP provider Sipgate or the Internet service provider 1 & 1 .

Kamailio is completely written in the C programming language and runs on Unix and GNU / Linux systems. It is distributed as free software also in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Functionality

Kamailio runs in the IP telephony environment primarily as a SIP proxy , registrar , but also as a location and application server or as a gateway to SMS and XMPP services. The functionality of the core software is strictly limited to basic routing and processing of SIP messages. The majority of the possible functions are integrated via modules .

There are several web-based graphical administration interfaces such as SerMyAdmin.

history

the history of the most important projects related to SER

The parent project SIP Express Router (SER) was launched in 2001. It was first published in September 2002. June 14, 2005 was OpenSER by the two SER-core developers Bogdan-Andrei Iancu and Daniel-Constantin Mierla together with the SER patron Elena-Ramona Modroiu of SER split.

In late July 2008, OpenSER because of trademark law issues in Kamailio renamed. In August, Bogdan Iancu split off the OpenSIPS project due to a dispute between the core developers . The SIP Router Project was founded in the second half of 2008 to bundle development efforts. After SER 2.1.0 and Kamailio 1.5.0 , the code trees of these two projects were combined. Kamailio 3.0 , released on January 11, 2010, is based on the new merged source code. OpenSIPS remained independent.
