Openwireless is a project launched in Switzerland in 2005 that aims to set up a free wireless LAN in several Swiss cities . Openwireless is organized as an association and is expanding its network with new members and wireless access points in large and important places. Projects have already been launched in Basel , Bern , Lucerne , Olten , Riederalp , Solothurn , St. Gallen and Zurich , with the network in St. Gallen being the largest.

The network in St. Gallen was co-financed by the city with 94,000 francs. The main access points are installed on the roofs of the town hall, the cantonal hospital and the editorial building of the St. Galler Tagblatt . Surrounding access points use the signals from the main access gateways. The project started on December 15, 2006; At the end of 2007, more than 100 access points were in use.

Since activity in the community around Openwireless has decreased significantly in recent years, the newly created network of the Freifunk Dreiländereck association has grown from various regions of Switzerland, but especially from the region around Basel .
