Operation Solare

The Operation Solare was a multinational operation against drug trafficking , which was completed in September 2008 after a period of 15 months. The operation was carried out by police and anti-drug units from the USA, Mexico, Italy and Guatemala, mainly against the Gulf cartel (Spanish: Cártel del Golfo) and the mafia organization 'Ndrangheta in the Calabria region of Italy.

Process and result

In the USA the operation was called Project Reckoning . More than 200 people were arrested in the course of the operation on September 16 and 17, 2008, 175 of them in Italy and 43 in Atlanta , the capital of the US state of Georgia. Others were arrested in Mexico and Guatemala.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration , drugs in excess of 16 tons of cocaine , 23.3 tons of marijuana , 450 kg of methamphetamines and 9 kg of heroin were seized. A further 176 vehicles and 167 weapons were confiscated. A financial asset of US $ 60.1 million was also seized . With this operation the transatlantic drug cartels could be weakened considerably. Three leading cartel groups, their personnel structure and their organizational structure could be identified.
