Offering box (Marienkirche in Lübeck)

The so-called monk or money man

The offering box of the Marienkirche in Lübeck was the work of the carver Benedikt Dreyer .

Sacrificial stock in Carl Julius Mildes Lübeck ABC , 1857

The actual offering box was a simple wooden box, to which the viewer's attention was drawn by a carved and painted wooden figure. This sculpture, approximately three-quarters life-size, depicts a well-fed man in a long robe and headgear who is about to pour a large amount of coins from a bowl into the offering box. This was supposed to appeal to the willingness of church visitors to donate. The statue, created by Dreyer between 1511 and 1525, was placed under the rood screen , which was also decorated by Dreyer, on the first northern choir pillar . It was popularly referred to as Geldmann or Mönch - the basis for the latter name is unclear - and was popular in old Lübeck, as evidenced by the fact that Carl Julius Milde dedicated a separate sheet to sculpture in his Lübeck ABC , which appeared in 1857 .

During the air raid on Lübeck on March 29, 1942 , the monk burned like the entire rood screen.
