The Závist oppidum is located in the area of the Dolní Břežany commune at an altitude of 391 meters above the right bank of the Vltava near the confluence of the Berounka River .

history

At its greatest extent it extended over an area of around 150 hectares, which was surrounded by defenses of almost 10 km in length. The hill is called Hradiště ob Závist . The oppidum had existed since the 6th century BC, although the place had been inhabited since at least the Late Bronze Age. Finds from southern Germany and today's Switzerland, France and Spain, the Eastern Alps, the Balkans to the Black Sea prove Europe-wide trade relationships and thus the outstanding supraregional importance of the settlement. As a special feature, an even higher acropolis was discovered, which must also have been an outstanding cultic place of supraregional function. The oppidum Závist fell victim to a major fire around 20 BC, at a time when the Celtic tribe of the Boier , who lived here, was ousted by Germanic tribes such as the Marcomanni .

Long-distance transport

An important north-south connection ran along the Vltava and the hillside settlements of Závist, Hrazany , Nevězice (near Orlík ) and Třísov (near Krummau ) through the Bohemian Forest and the Haselgraben to the Oppidum Gründberg in the Linz Danube region .
