Opuntia chisosensis is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). An English common name is "Texas Prickly Pear".

description

Opuntia chisosensis grows shrubby with numerous upright branches and forms groups up to 1 meter high. The more or less circular shoot sections , only thorny in the upper third, are 16 to 29 centimeters long and 13 to 22 centimeters wide. The glochids are yellow. The one to five spread or downwardly curved thorns are bright yellow and reach a length of up to 6.5 centimeters.

The light yellowish-ocher flowers have a diameter of up to 6.5 centimeters. The reddish purple thorny fruits are obovate to spherical and have a length of 3 to 4 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia chisosensis is distributed in the United States in the west of the state of Texas in the Chisos Mountains and in the Mexican state in the Sierra del Carmen .

It was first described as Opuntia lindheimeri var. Chisosensis in 1959 by Margery Stuart Anthony . David J. Ferguson elevated the variety to the rank of a species in 1986.
