Opuntia megapotamica is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet megapotamica means (Latin megapotamicus) growing on the large river , namely on the Rio de la Plata, Uruguay '.

description

Opuntia megapotamica grows as a shrub with upright branches and reaches heights of up to one meter. The cloudy green obovate to more or less circular shoot sections are 10 to 12 inches long and wide, and 2 to 3 inches thick and very strong. The areoles are spotted dark. The one or two, rarely three, thorns , which can also be missing, are 2 to 3 centimeters or more long.

The flowers are orange and the elongated fruits are yellow.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia megapotamica is widespread in Uruguay and the adjacent northeast of Argentina at altitudes of 100 to 1000 meters.

The first description by José Arechavaleta was published in 1905.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
