Opuntia montevideensis is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet montevideensis means '(lat. Montevidensis) from the location near Montevideo'.

description

Opuntia montevideensis grows as a shrub with several prostrate to slightly upright branches and reaches heights of up to 50 centimeters and a diameter of 75 centimeters. The egg-shaped to elliptical shoot sections are 7 to 10 inches long and up to 4.5 inches wide. The areoles are inconspicuous. From them arise one to three strong, up to 3 centimeters long central spines and two to four bristle-like, thin, whitish radial spines lying on the shoot surface.

The orange flowers are up to 3.5 centimeters long. The purple-colored club-shaped fruits reach a length of up to 4 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia montevideensis is common in Uruguay .

The first description by Carlos Luis Spegazzini was published in 1905.
