Opuntia nejapensis is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet nejapensis means 'from the location near Nejapa in Oaxaca / Mexico'.
description
Opuntia nejapensis grows tree-shaped and forms a conspicuous trunk. The yellowish green, somewhat wavy, obovate shoot sections are 30 to 35 centimeters long and 20 to 25 centimeters wide. The few, large, elliptical areoles are 5 to 7 centimeters apart. From them arise usually three awl, very thick, white thorns with a yellowish tip and 2 to 8 centimeters in length. The top of them is the longest.
The flowers are yellow. The fig-shaped fruits reach a length of 7 to 8 centimeters and a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. They are large tubercles, but have no thorns or glochids.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia nejapensis is common in the Mexican state of Oaxaca .
The first description by Helia Bravo Hollis was published in 1972.
