Opuntia oricola is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet oricola means '(greich, oros, mountains) and (Latin cola, inhabit) stands for an occurrence in the mountains'.
description
Opuntia oricola grows shrubby to tree-shaped and reaches heights of 1 to 3 meters. The elliptical to circular shoot sections are 15 to 25 inches long and 12 to 19 inches wide. The areoles , measuring 4.5 to 6 millimeters in diameter , are 1.2 to 2 centimeters apart. The four to 16 yellow and translucent thorns turn gray or black with age. They are bent and slightly twisted, not roughened, and 2 to 4 inches long.
The yellow flowers reach a diameter of 5 to 6 centimeters. The almost spherical, fleshy, red fruits are 2.5 to 4 centimeters long and reach the same diameter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia oricola is distributed in the United States in the south of the state of California and in the Mexican state of Baja California up to an altitude of 500 meters.
The first description by Ralph N. Philbrick was published in 1964.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
