The Oratory of San Francesco Saverio , better known as Oratorio del Caravita , is a church in Rome dedicated to the Spanish Jesuit Francis Xavier ( Italian: Francesco Saverio ).

location

The church is in the IX. Roman Rione Pigna next to the church of Sant'Ignazio not far from the confluence of Via del Caravita with Via del Corso .

Building history

Originally the church of San Nicola de Forbitoribus of the Camaldolese order stood here , built into an arch of the Acqua Vergine . The Jesuits exchanged this church for the Palazzo di Alessandro Vitelleschi for the expansion of the Collegio Romano . From 1630, the Jesuit priest Pietro Garavita arranged for the oratory to be rebuilt on the site of the old church , which was given the popular and much better-known name Oratorio del Caravita after him. Originally it was dedicated to the Mater Pietatis , the Merciful Mother. It was not rededicated to the Jesuit saint Francesco Saverio until 1670. On the occasion of this event, the church was fundamentally redesigned by Giovanni Antonio De Rossi .

architecture

The church consists of a single nave interior with a semicircular apse. The architecture of the two-storey facade adapts to the adjoining Collegio Romano. The decoration with frescoes was carried out by Lazzaro Baldi and Sebastiano Conca . The church also contains frescoes by Baldassare Peruzzi , which were transferred from the demolished church of San Rocco a Ripetta.

reception

The church is treated in two sonnets by Giuseppe Gioachino Belli .
