Orbcomm is a listed company based in Fort Lee (New Jersey) , in which the German technology group OHB , among others , has a stake. It operates a data communications network that forwards text messages from anywhere on earth. Applications are, for example, container tracking, machine monitoring or measurement data transmission.

Orbcomm Germany is the German national representative of Orbcomm Europa LLC, a company that markets telecommunications services for the Orbcomm satellite system in Europe. These resellers provide complete end-to-end solutions and support for mobile and fixed installations.

Satellites

The Orbcomm satellite constellation is initially based on a total of 29 small satellites that orbit the earth in six orbits at an altitude of approx. 800 km ( Low Earth Orbit , LEO) and 13 earth stations distributed around the world. The satellites receive the data directly from small radios and forward them to the recipient via a gateway as Internet e-mail or X.400 . Orbcomm guarantees that 90% of emails will reach their addressees within six minutes. The small satellites weigh around 45 kg and have an electrical output of 160 W. They were launched from the aircraft using Pegasus rockets.

There was also a second series of 17 satellites. 18 were planned, but the launch of the first satellite together with a Dragon spaceship on October 8, 2012 failed: The satellite was placed in an orbit that was too low and burned up after just two days in the earth's atmosphere. The launch of the next six satellites with a Falcon 9 on July 14, 2014 was successful, as was a third launch with 11 satellites - also with a Falcon 9 - in the ORBCOMM OG-2 Mission 2 on December 22, 2015.

Uplink / downlink

The FM band between 137 MHz and 150 MHz is used. The data rate in the uplink is 4.8 kbit / s and 2.4 kbps in SDPSK modulation.
