The Ordem Dom Martinho Lopes is an order of East Timor .

The order is named after Martinho da Costa Lopes , the apostolic administrator of Dili (1977-1983) and was created by presidential decree 50/2007. It honors priests and nuns who “served the people and the cause of the Timorese” between 1975 and 1999. The creation of the order is intended to honor members of the clergy and to recognize their “significant contribution” that they have made to the “struggle for national independence” regardless of their nationality. The medal winners receive the title “Supporters of the struggle for national liberation”.

Decree 50/2007 states:

“Na sua vertente cultural e humana, a Igreja Católica em Timor-Leste semper soube assumir, com dignidade, o sofrimento de todo o povo, colocando-se ao seu lado na defesa dos seus mais elementares direitos. Este facto histórico e humano é reconhecido na nossa Constituição que, no n ° 2 do Artigo 11 °, refere: “ O Estado reconhece e valoriza a participação da Igreja Católica no processo de libertação nacional de Timor-Leste ”. »
