Medal for Fighters of National Liberation

The general recognition and appreciation of the Timorese resistance and the contribution of all those who fought for national independence is a fundamental principle enshrined in Section 11 of the East Timorese Constitution. The medals are awarded by order of the President, who receives proposals from the Commission for Appreciation, Registration Supervision and Revision ( Portuguese Comissão de Homenagem, Supervisão do Registo e Recurso ).

With the law 3/2006 "Estatuto dos Combatentes da Libertação Nacional" ( German  statute of the fighters of the national liberation ) the system of the state awards East Timor was introduced. Article 29 listed the medals with which services in the fight against the Indonesian occupation (1975-1999) should be awarded. Article 28 listed the activities to be honored. In addition, the Ordem Lorico Asuwain and the Ordem das Falintil were created with the presidential decree 52/2006 . The presidential decree 53/2006 of October 17, 2006 determined the appearance of six of the seven orders, the Ordem de Laran Luak followed with the presidential decree 13/2007 of April 4, 2007. With the presidential decree 54/2006 of 17. November 2006 and the presidential decree 54/2006 of December 5, 2006, the first order bearers were listed.

The various medals have been awarded several thousand times. In a large ceremony from May 15 to 18, 2007 alone, 11,995 victims of the War of Liberation were honored. The first awards took place on the day of proclamation 2006, November 28th.

With the presidential decree 50/2007, the Ordem Dom Martinho Lopes was created. It honors priests and nuns who “served the people and the cause of the Timorese” between 1975 and 1999.
