The Burg Hohenstein was a Teutonic castle of the Teutonic Order in the then East Prussian city Hohenstein, today Olsztynek .

history

Hohenstein Castle was laid out in 1350 under Commander Günter von Hohensteins north of the Mispelsee, after which the castle and place were named. After the lost battle of Tannenberg (1410) , the order burned the castle down itself in 1414 so as not to let it fall into the hands of the Poles. However, it was soon rebuilt under the command of Wolf von Sansheim. In 1440 Hohenstein joined the Prussian Confederation , but returned to the order in the Thirteen Years' War . In the equestrian war of 1519–1526, Hohenstein was occupied by Polish troops. In the Duchy of Prussia the castle became the seat of an official governor. In 1847 a grammar school was set up in the Ordensburg. The castle also survived the Second Battle of Tannenberg . The castle has served as a vocational school since the city was taken over by Poland.
