The orderly revolver 1878 is an orderly weapon introduced by Federal Council resolution in 1878 after the manufacture of the orderly revolver was discontinued in 1872. The weapon missed the black powder cartridge in caliber 10.4 mm with center-fire percussion. From 1879 to 1880, 6000 of these revolvers were manufactured in the Swiss Federal Arms Factory in Bern, of which 4601 were delivered to the war material administration. The Ordonnanzrevolver 1878 was the last 10.4 mm caliber revolver manufactured for the army . To arm the unmounted officers, the revolver Model 1882 in caliber 7.5 mm was introduced in 1882 .

history

After the introduction of the Chamelot-Delvigne revolver, which was further developed by Rudolf Schmidt , the Ordonnanzrevolver 1872 , which proved itself with its simple structure, various submissions were submitted to the Federal Military Department that criticized the revolver 1872 as out of date and the replacement by modern developments with automatic case ejection or an extraction star analogous to the Smith & Wesson system. Reason: faster rate of fire. Attempts with a revolver system v. Steiger gave a rate of fire of 10 rounds in 20 seconds, while the Ordonnanzrevolver 1872 brought it to 6 rounds. Emil Krauser, foreman at the weapons factory in Bern , also fitted a revolver developed by J. Warnant in Belgium with an automatic device for ejecting the case in 1877. All of Rudolf Schmidt's objections to the fact that the lock on these guns with automatic case ejection was too complicated and would lead to failure were not accepted, even General Hans Herzog ignored Schmidt's objection. Schmidt subsequently designed a number of prototypes with a folding or swiveling barrel and an extraction star for ejecting the cases.

After tests with all of these revolvers, the military department finally recognized that the safe functioning of a weapon in the field is more important than its theoretically possible firing sequence. In addition, there were price reasons that prompted the Federal Council to introduce the Warnant revolver.

In 1877, the Swiss Federal Military Department ordered 10 Warnant revolvers in Swiss caliber 10.4 with central ignition from Scholberg & Cadet in Liège , Belgium.

Federal Council decision of September 27, 1878

  • 1. Central firing mode for revolvers
  • 2. Modification of the revolver in 1872
  • 3. Adoption of a modified revolver model No 8 with Warnant lock construction and improved unloading platform, as orderly model 1878, for future purchases in place of the previous model 1872

Federal Council resolution of May 21, 1879

  • Adjustment of orderliness for the revolver model 1878, with the adoption of 7 amendments proposed by R. SCHMIDT

technology

Apart from the lock mechanism, the cartridge ejector, the lack of a loading flap and the materials used, the Ordonnanzrevolver 1878 System Warnant corresponds to its predecessor, the Ordonnanzrevolver 1872. As with these, the lock is double-acting , for precision shooting the cock is cocked by hand, only for rapid firing the trigger pulled.

The Warnant-Schmidt system lock mechanism consists of fewer parts than its predecessor, model 1872. The function is shown in the illustrations SCHWEIZERISCHER REVOLVER model 1878 and HAHN & CHIEN .

The loading flap was dispensed with because the position of the drum does not allow the cartridges to fall out during transport and firing (original text of the 1878 regulations: "The oblique insertion in the base of the frame prevents them from voluntarily retreating").

The 1878 revolvers had hard rubber grips, total length of the weapon 280 mm, weight 1000 g. Line of sight 175 mm. The octagonal barrel, barrel length 150 mm in caliber 10.4 mm had 4 trains, depth of the trains 0.30 mm, a handle 250 mm, right hand twist.

ammunition

The orderly revolver model 1878 fired like the orderly revolver 1872, which was changed to central ignition, the central fire cartridges with Berdan ignition manufactured in the Federal Laboratory in Thun .
