Orectochilus is a genus of the tumble beetle family(Gyrinidae). Of these, only the hairy tumbler beetle ( Orectochilus villosus )occurs in Europe, which is also native to Central Europe.
features
The beetles can be distinguished from those of the genus Gyrinus by their finely and densely punctiform and finely hairy top. The body is very narrow, the anal sternite is drawn out into a long cone. The top wings are missing rows of dots.
Occurrence and way of life
The animals live in streams and rivers and can be found especially under weirs and the like. During the day they usually hide in groups and only become active in the evening. Then they swim quickly along the surface of the water. Mating takes place on land, after which the male eats the spermatophore envelope.
