The organs of the cathedral of Nantes were the main organ on the west gallery as well as the still existing choir organ. The latter was built by Louis Debierre in 1896 and is the largest choir organ in France with 31 stops . The main organ by François-Henri Clicquot from 1784 had been expanded and rebuilt several times and finally had 74 registers, which were distributed over four manuals and pedal . It was destroyed by fire on July 18, 2020.

Main organ

Building history

The main organ with 74 registers and a prospectus from 1619 was on the west gallery. It was based on an organ by Jacques Girardet (1619, II / P / 29), which was expanded by Adrien Lépine in 1768. The extension conversion 1780–1784 by François-Henri Clicquot was equivalent to a new building (V / P / 49). In 1868 the work of Merklin-Schütze from Paris, who was preferred to Aristide Cavaillé-Coll , was restored and revised. In 1933, Beuchet-Debierre from Nantes rebuilt it and pneumatized the action . The war damage of 1944 was repaired by Joseph Beuchet in 1971 . It survived the fire in the cathedral in 1972 almost unscathed. In a major fire on July 18, 2020, the great organ was completely destroyed.
