Marcel Courtonne

Marcel Joseph Hippolyte Courtonne (born June 8, 1883 ; died August 12, 1954 ) was a French organist and composer .

Career

Marcel Courtonne's parents were Jean Marie Hyppolite Courtonne (1846-1908), Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Joséphine Alexandrine Aguesse (1856-1935), his brother Yves Jules Marie Joseph Courtonne (1892-1974).

At the age of 18 he published two organ pieces in Le journal des Organistes , including the " Toccata en ut mineur". He was ordained a priest on June 19, 1906. From March 1907 to July 1909 he was choir organist at Nantes Cathedral .

Courtonne was a student of the " Schola Cantorum " in Paris with Louis Vierne and Abel Decaux , studied composition with Vincent d'Indy as well as music history, counterpoint and fugue. Vierne and d'Indy conveyed influences from César Franck and Gabriel Fauré . Marcel Courtonne admired Debussy and Ravel equally . In 1922 he was appointed titular organist of the organs of the Nantes cathedral . He had the instrument restored (by FH Clicquot), whereby most of the organ was preserved; It was inaugurated again by Louis Vierne in 1933.

In 1934 he founded the journal L'organiste and ran it with great success until 1951. As an organ teacher he published two works with the title Méthodes d'harmonium ou d'orgue . In 1937 he founded the “César Franck” music school, where he trained his students, but also organized concerts and conferences.

Courtonne was valued as an interpreter and improviser. From 1944 to 1950 he was a musical columnist for Eastern France. His successor as organist was his pupil Félix Moreau .
