The term orientation test is generally used for tests that are brought forward for the purpose of early recognition of suitability.

At Baden-Württemberg universities such an orientation test at the beginning of is study before the actual first test (the intermediate examination store). The aim of the orientation test is to show the student at an early stage whether he has made the right choice of course and is up to the requirements. The orientation test must have been completed by the end of the second semester.

If the orientation examination is not passed (and possibly also not possible re-examinations), this usually leads to de-registration .
