As abdominal angina or angina intestinalis (less than intermittent claudication intestinalis , Dysbasia intestinalis or Ortner's syndrome II ) is a circulatory disorder of the intestinal wall called, mostly to atherosclerosis of the mesenteric vessels ( superior mesenteric artery , inferior mesenteric artery is) due and a warning for represents an impending mesenteric infarction . The extent of the threat of intestinal damage depends on the duration of the pre-existing circulatory disorder and any possible formation of a collateral circulation .

etiology

In 90 percent of cases, a stenosis of the blood vessels is the cause of the symptoms.

Symptoms

A reduced blood supply to the intestine does not initially have to cause symptoms and can be an incidental finding . On the other hand, discreet to severe abdominal pain, often 15 to 30 minutes after ingestion, is possible and can last for hours. This can lead to the fact that the patients eat smaller meals and thus achieve an improvement of the symptoms. The resulting weight loss is often desired, albeit forced, and delays clarification.

Diagnosis

Despite improved examination techniques such as Doppler duplex sonography , angiography and high-resolution computed tomography , intestinal circulatory disorders are still a diagnostic challenge today. If the problem is identified early enough, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stent implantation can be successful in addition to open abdominal surgery . As a sensitive examination prior to angiography, MR angiography of the abdomen is recommended for diagnosis.
