The oriental cicada ( Orientus ishidae ) is a dwarf cicada from the subfamily of the chirps (Deltocephalinae).

features

The cicadas are 4.3–6.5 mm long. They are easy to identify by the pattern on the forewings, which is reminiscent of mosaics . Accordingly, the species of cicada bears the common English name Mosaic Leafhopper ("Mosaic Cicada").

Occurrence

The species was originally only found in the eastern Palearctic (Japan). In English it is therefore also called Japanese Leafhopper ("Japanese cicada"). The cicada species was introduced to North America in the early 20th century. The species came to the United States with nursery plants and was first detected in New Jersey in 1919 . In Europe, the oriental cicada was first detected in Italy in 1998. Since then, the cicada species has spread across much of Europe. It was first observed in Germany in 2002. It was first spotted in the British Isles in 2011.

Way of life

The cicadas suckle on the leaves and stems of bushes and trees ( willow ( Salix ), hornbeam , apple and American Gleditschia ). The adults of a generation fly from June to October. Most of the nymphs are observed in June.

Harmful effect

The oriental cicada causes less damage to the leaves of trees. The cicada species was identified as a potential carrier of various bacterial strains ( Candidatus phytoplasma ). These are responsible for the golden yellowing , a plant disease of grapevines . Thus, the cicada species is considered a potential pest .
