The Orion arm (also local arm ) is a spiral arm of the Milky Way , which among other things contains our solar system .

The Orion arm lies between the large Sagittarius arm and the Perseus arm and is probably a smaller branch. It is about 20,000 light years long, 2,000 light years wide, and about 26,000 light years from the Galactic Center . It is characterized by a number of hot class O and B stars , most of which belong to the constellation Orion . This is why it got its name, Orion Arm .

The sun and its system lies - in the longitudinal direction approximately in the middle - on the inner edge of the Orion arm, which is towards the galactic center.
