The ornament carpet shark ( Orectolobus ornatus , originally Crossorhinus ornatus , at times also Orectolobus devisi ) is a real shark from the family of carpet sharks (Orectolobidae). It lives in the West Pacific around eastern Indonesia , off Papua New Guinea and off the Australian east and south coast. Larger specimens sighted to the south are sometimes assigned to a separate species, Orectolobus halei .
features
The species is flat with a broad head and body, and reaches a maximum length of almost 2.90 m. It has barbels , some of which are branched, around the upper jaw . The coloring is reddish light brown, on the head, back and tail the kind of saddles has striking, black-dotted drawings that give it its name.
Way of life
The ornamental carpet shark lives on the continental shelf in bays, over algae-covered rocks and in front of coral reefs at depths of up to 100 m. He hunts smaller sharks and rays, cephalopods and crustaceans at night, and hides during the day. The species is ovoviviparous .
