The real carpet sharks or wobbegongs ( Orectolobus ) are a genus of sharks with ten species. They are strongly flattened dorsoventrally and usually clearly patterned. They wear membranous rags and barbels around their mouths .
Way of life
The real carpet sharks inhabit the shallow water areas and coral reefs of warm, mostly tropical waters from Japan to Southeast Asia to the Australian coasts. There they dig into the muddy seabed during the day or hide in reef crevices and caves. Their young give birth to these sharks alive. The animals feed mainly on bottom-living fish and crustaceans, squids, other bottom-living invertebrates and sea anemones.
species
The genus of the real carpet sharks is currently undergoing intensive systematic processing, so that statements about the internal relationships cannot be made. With the western carpet shark ( O. hutchinsi ) described scientifically in 2006 , the O. floridus O. reticulatus and O. parvimaculatus described in 2008 as well as the Orectolobus leptolineatus described in 2010, five new species have been described in recent years, described during the 1840 and as a synonym for O. halei regarded ornamented carpet shark again in 2006 as a separate species.
