Orectolobus halei , as Gebänderter Teppichhai (Engl. Banded wobbegong or gulf wobbegong ), is a Teppichhaiart from the family Orectolobidae .

Occurrence and characteristics

The banded carpet shark can be found in southern Australia between Southport and Norwegian Bay as well as in eastern and western Australia. Warm and muddy shallow water bottoms are preferred, but it can be found at depths of 200 m.

In terms of appearance, it is very similar to the ornament carpet shark and used to be synonymous until 2006, when it was re-described and classified as a separate species. Regardless of genetic analyzes showed that the banded Teppichhai closer to the sympatric living Commons Teppichhai is used as the ornate wobbegong.

Compared to the common and the ornamental carpet shark, the banded carpet shark has more skin flaps in the posterior pre-orbital area, a shorter distance between the pelvic fin and anal fin , larger pectoral fins , a larger skull and larger clasps in the adult state. The shark is also larger overall than the other two species mentioned, on average just under 2 m, but lengths of up to 2.9 m are documented, which corresponds to about twice the length of the ornamental carpet shark.

The food spectrum includes bottom-dwelling fish and invertebrates, as well as crustaceans and cephalopods.

Reproduction takes place in the ovoviviparous way. A female hatches up to 30 young.
