Oronsay Great Cross

The Oronsay Great Cross , also Oronsay High Cross , is a stone Celtic cross on the Scottish Hebridean island of Oronsay . It stands near the ruins of the listed Oronsay monastery in the north-west of the island. The Oronsay Great Cross is classified as a Scheduled Monument .

From a travel report from 1695 it is known that at that time three stone crosses were erected east of the monastery walls, while today only the Oronsay Great Cross remains. One of these crosses could be the Campbeltown Cross , which is said to have been transported from Oronsay to Campbelltown and erected there in the 18th century . Fragments of probably two other late medieval crosses were also found nearby.

description

An inscription shows that the cross commemorates the death of Prior Colin , who headed the Oronsay monastery. It is likely from 1510, the year Colin died, although estimates have been made for completion around 1495. The stone cross is about four meters east of the ruins of the monastery church and rises from a four-step foundation. On the west-facing side of the cross, scenes of the crucifixion of Jesus are carved next to inscriptions in the cross shaft. On the east side, however, foliage motifs can be seen.
