history

There are indications of an earlier monastery at this location on Oronsay, which Saint Columban is said to have founded. It should therefore come from the 6th century. However, it is not certain whether this monastery actually existed. The founder of the Oronsay Monastery , which is now in ruins, was John of Islay , the first Lord of the Isles . The complex was probably completed around 1350. The earliest written evidence of the existence of the monastery is from 1353.

In the east are the oldest parts of the complex, which are probably among the first buildings to be built. How big the entire monastery complex was at that time is not certain. A second construction phase can be dated to the late 14th or early 15th century. In addition to new buildings, existing buildings could also have been expanded. In the late 15th century the facility was extensively redesigned. In a further construction phase in the late 15th or early 16th century, the choir was expanded and a chapel was added. The stone and classified separately as a memorial Celtic cross Oronsay Great Cross was made around the year 1510th Around this time the monastery arcades were also redesigned. This work was carried out by the stonemason Mael-Sechlainn O 'Cuinn . Exactly when the monastery was abandoned is not recorded. After the secularization of the complex in 1616, it was described in the 1620s as partially ruinous with collapsed roofs. In 1883 the Oronsay Monastery was partially restored.
