Orpheus statue (Düren)

The Orpheus statue

The Orpheus statue in the North Rhine-Westphalian district town of Düren is an unsigned and dated bronze figure. It is a cast of the original statue from 1959. It was given to the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum on its 75th birthday in 1980 by the Düren industry and stood to the right of the entrance from 1984 until the museum received the new extension.

The Orpheus statue was created in 1959 by the artist Gerhard Marcks , who repeatedly dealt with the Orpheus myth in drawings and woodcuts, who for him was an artist , but also a lover and seeker. With his bronze sculpture he created a young artist with a laurel wreath, completely lost in himself, barefoot, in a simple Greek robe and - completely unusual for a representation of Orpheus - with a violin instead of a lyre , the classical Greek instrument.

Orpheus is not trapped in the game. He holds up the violin bow, his forehead leans towards it, the violin is lowered. Either the artist's concentration is captured shortly before the game or - what seems more likely - the moment immediately after the game. The artist's eyes are closed, there is a slight melancholy emanating from this Orpheus and a fascinating timelessness.

With its new location in front of the music school on the corner of August-Klotz-Straße / Tivolistraße, it has moved more into focus.
