The Orsbacher Wald nature reserve is located in the area of the city of Aachen near Orsbach .

description

The nature reserve consists of two areas separated by cultivated fields. The southern part consists almost entirely of a previously managed coppice with coppice and root sprouts . The upper part consists of surface acidified soils with a species-poor oak - hornbeam forest and a lower part consists of species-rich oak-hornbeam forest on a soil made of flint chalk and Vijlen limestone. The border to the cultivated fields is formed by a dense bush border with mesobromion fragments. This forest has not been managed for years and has therefore become almost impenetrable. With its rotting trunks and stumps, it is ideal for the small animal fauna native to this biotope. To the north is a small limestone quarry that has eroded into a funnel. Are at the edge margins blackthorn , hawthorn and other typical trees to find. Inside is a limestone semi-dry lawn and stunted winter linden.

The northern part is a lot smaller with 4 hectares. Here, too, there is a coppice forest that used to be cultivated with a birch-rich oak-hornbeam forest and undergrowth with few species. Half have now been beaten and left to their own devices. The soil is very acidic. The natural vegetation would be the Milio-Fagetum. There is a very rich butterfly fauna with an estimated 350–400 species.

Protection purpose

The protection goal is the preservation and restoration of the habitats of certain wild plants and animals living in the wild, as well as the limestone grassland, as well as the preservation for cultural reasons, here as a historical form of forest management.
