Orthodox Anglican Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Orthodox Anglican Church (OAC, dt. Orthodox-Anglican Church) is the American branch of the Orthodox Anglican Communion . Because of constitutional and doctrinal similarities, it is commonly viewed as part of the Continuing Anglican Movement , although the Church's origins predate that movement and publicly criticized the Continuing Anglican Churches when they were formed in the late 1970s.

history

In 1963 it was founded as the " Anglican Orthodox Church ". The founders wanted to found a conservative Low Church as an alternative to the Episcopal Church . The apostolic succession was achieved through the ordination of James Parker Dees by bishops of the Orthodox and Old Catholic Churches .

In 1999, Bishop Robert Godfrey agreed a closer connection to the liturgy of the Continuing Anglican Churches and the name change. Godfrey and his suffragan bishop Scott Earle McLaughlin signed the Bartonville Agreement . Some lay ecclesiastical people who were close to the founding bishop and a minority of the clergy then succeeded in having the church property divided and founded a new denomination with the original principles and the name "Anglican Orthodox Church".

On April 30, 2000, Bishop Godfrey retired and turned over the reign of the Church to his suffragan McLaughlin.

In 2005 the name of the district was changed from "Episcopal Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of America" to "Orthodox Anglican Church".

Signed in 2007 McLaughlin also a document of intercommunion ( Covenant of intercommunion ) between the OAC and the Old Catholic Church in Slovakia . This Old Catholic Church separated from the Utrecht Union in 2004 because the Union advocated the ordination of women and the blessing of same-sex couples.

In 2012, Archbishop McLaughlin resigned and nominated Creighton Jones of Myrtle Beach , South Carolina as his successor. This nomination was confirmed by the General Convention on June 9, 2012. Jones was ordained and installed as Presiding Bishop and Metropolitan Archbishop of the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd in Myrtle Beach on July 21, 2012 .

In 2014, the Church celebrated 50 years of self-employment and recognition by the State of North Carolina . Soon after (November 16, 2014) Archbishop Jones announced his resignation and nominated Thomas Gordon as his successor. An Extraordinary General Assembly was held on April 18, 2015, at which delegates from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico unanimously accepted the nomination. Thomas E. Gordon was installed as the sixth bishop of the Orthodox Anglican Church .

Institutions

Cranmer Seminary was established as a training facility on September 19, 1971, and became part of the Church in 1975. In 2002 the school was renamed Saint Andrew's Theological College and Seminary .

The seat of the church is in Charlotte . The Presiding Bishop, Thomas E. Gordon is also Metropolitan of the worldwide Orthodox Anglican Communion .
