history

The Lipovans are Russian Old Believers who fled from persecution in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The head of the church bears the title of Archbishop of Belaya Krinitsa and Metropolitan of all Orthodox Christians . His actual official seat is in Bila Krynyzja (Russian Belaja Kriniza , Romanian Fântâna-Albă ) a village in the Chernivtsi Oblast , Ukraine , where a significant Lipovan minority still lives today. However, the bishop's seat was moved to Brăila in Romania in 1940 . Metropolitan Leonti has been the head of the Orthodox old ritualist church since October 24, 1996 .
