The Church of St. Nicholas of Myra is a church building in Düsseldorf- Wersten , built around 1960 , which has been used by the Orthodox Parish of the Holy Archangels since 2008 , together with the adjacent community center.

Church building

The Orthodox church on Werstener Feld 65, consecrated to St. Nicholas of Myra , was built around 1960 by the Diakonisches Werk as an Orthodox center for the exiled and diaspora congregations and, until 2007, jointly by the congregations of the Ukrainian , Romanian , Serbian and Russian Orthodox Churches utilized. At the beginning of 2008, the Orthodox Parish of the Holy Archangels moved into the church and the community center and has been using it since then as the only Orthodox community. In the church there are works by the artist Hildegard Bienen .

Parish

The Orthodox parish of the Holy Archangels is the only German-language and national Orthodox church in North Rhine-Westphalia . It was founded in 1958 by Archpriest Sergius Heitz . Since 1975 it has been subordinate to the Archbishop of the Archbishopric of Orthodox Congregations of Russian Tradition in Western Europe with its seat in Paris, the multinational Western European Diocese of the Ecumenical Patriarchate . For half a century, the Jan Wellem Chapel in Düsseldorf-Hamm was the community's place of worship. In accordance with the Archbishopric's self-image, the congregation of the Holy Archangels also sees itself as a local church and not as an exile or national church .
