Orthotylus bilineatus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 4.6 to 5.3 millimeters long. The species of the genus Orthotylus are predominantly green in color. Many are extremely similar and are therefore very difficult to determine based on external characteristics. The host plants of the respective individuals are therefore an important indicator. Orthotylus bilineatus is one of the more identifiable species. The sides of their pronotum are concave and the clavus of the hemielytras and the center of the scutellum are darkened. The antennae are mostly dark.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is common in Europe with the exception of the south. To the east, it spreads across Siberia to China and Japan. It is widespread in Germany, but rarely occurs regionally. It is more common in the east than in the west, but it can also occur in large numbers. It is more common especially in higher altitudes. In Austria there are so far only individual proofs.
Way of life
The bugs live on poplars ( Populus ), in Germany predominantly on aspen ( Populus tremula ). The adult bugs can be observed from July to September, sometimes from mid-June. Males are apparently much rarer than females.
