Ortolani test

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ortolani test is an examination of the hip joints in newborns , but also in veterinary medicine , by means of which the Ortolani sign of the same name or the Ortolani restriction phenomenon is triggered. It is named after the Italian pediatrician and orthopedic surgeon Marino Ortolani .

The examination method is used for preventive examinations in newborns or when dysplasia of the hip joints is suspected . To do this, the thighs are pressed vertically towards the spine and then moved outwards . In the presence of hip dysplasia, the initially subluxated femoral heads slide back into the acetabulum with a click - the Ortolani sign. In the positive case, the test may only be carried out once on the newborn, as otherwise the cartilaginous edge of the acetabulum (the acetabular labrum ) can be damaged by the femoral head sliding over it repeatedly.

The Ortolani test is also used in canine hip dysplasia .
