OruxMaps is a navigation program developed by Jose Vasquez for the Android operating system, the preferred use of which on mobile devices is geared towards hikers, cyclists and pleasure boaters. The first version of the program appeared in 2009. Language versions are available in Spanish, English, French and German. According to the download statistics, more than a million users are assumed.

Functions

The program enables the display of geographical maps on Android devices in two modes. The online display via a cellular network uses a variety of maps from OpenStreetMap , OpenSeaMap , Google Maps , MicrosoftMaps , Chartbundle US, TopOSM USA, Multimap UK, etc. In addition, offline maps stored locally on the device can be used if no cellular network is available or a cellular connection is available z. B. is not desirable for cost reasons. Grid and vector-based maps are supported. Offline maps can be created with an internal map editor. You can also load maps that have been created on the PC with external programs such as the Mobile Atlas Creator (MOBAC) and that are individual in terms of extent and depth. Ready-made offline maps for most of the world's most interesting tourist regions are available on the Internet. As of version 5.0, 3D maps can also be displayed if the map source contains the corresponding height information. Using the GPS function available via satellites , your own position can be found in online maps or calibrated offline maps. Furthermore, tracks and routes can be created, saved, edited and loaded in GPX format. The KML format from Google Maps or Google Earth is also supported. The program also includes a route planner function for routes by car, bike and on foot.

Applications

In addition to its predominantly private use, the program was used in academic projects such as risk management for food safety and agricultural productivity or the assessment of vegetation boundaries in desert regions.

Availability

The current Oruxmaps version (Oruxmaps GP) is only available as a paid version via the Google Play Store . Older versions can be downloaded free of charge from the Oruxmaps website. The background is that the app was temporarily removed from the Google Play Store by Google. The reason was "it has been removed from Google Play because it violates the payments policy". "It was removed from the Google Play Store because it violated the payment guidelines." Until 2017, the free version was also available directly from the Play Store.
