Ory Okolloh Mwangi (* 1977 in Kenya ) is a Kenyan lawyer, activist, blogger and manager.

Youth and education

Ory Okolloh was born into a relatively poor family. She reported that her parents had sent her to a private elementary school that they "could hardly afford" but that formed the basis of her later career. She studied political science at the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from Harvard Law School in 2005 with a law degree .

Career

In 2006, Okolloh and others founded the internet platform "Mzalendo" ( Swahili : "Patriot"), which was supposed to serve as extra-parliamentary control of the government through systematic reporting on laws, speeches, members of parliament, the rules of procedure, etc.

When Kenya sank into violence in the wake of the 2007 presidential election, Okolloh, along with Erik Hersman, Juliana Rotich and David Kobia, created the non-profit technology company Ushahidi (Swahili: "testimony"), on whose website eyewitness reports of acts of violence were collected and recorded Use of texts on social media with geographic assignments on Google Maps . The technology was subsequently adapted and was used on other occasions (election observation, natural disasters, availability of medicines) and in many other countries.

While still a student, Okolloh wrote a personal blog , Kenyan Pundit , which appeared on Global Voices Online .

She worked as a legal advisor to NGOs , the international law firm Covington and Burling and the Kenyan Human Rights Commission .

She is a member of the World Bank Committee for determining key figures in the field of government tasks such as health and education.

From 2011 to 2013 she was the head of strategy for Africa at Google .

Okolloh was elected to the advisory board of the Thomson Reuters Founders Share Company in May 2018 , which is responsible for ensuring compliance with the company's mission statement .

She heads the holding companies of the philanthropic company Omidyar Network, founded by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar in 1998 .

Private

Ory Okolloh is married and lives with her husband and three children in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi .
