Oscar Roth

Oscar Roth (born November 16, 1910 in Vienna , † January 16, 1981 ) was an Austrian medic and American medical officer in the army .

Life

Roth was born the son of Hungarian emigrants. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, married a fellow student and emigrated to the USA in 1938 .

When he was naturalized in May 1944, he joined the US military and then came as a medical officer via France to Germany and Austria, where he was one of the first to enter the Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps after their liberation.

Roth made many recordings of the concentration camps and former prisoners, which he summarized in a commented album. In addition, he also recorded minutes and translated them. After his death, his wife donated a copy of the album to Yale University .
