Oskar Merkel (born October 9, 1836 in Esslingen , † May 28, 1912 ) was a German industrialist. The Villa Merkel and Merkel's swimming pool in Esslingen go back to him.

Life

Oskar Merkel was the eldest son of the married couple Johannes and Louise Merkel, nee Bulkhead. He received a humanistic education and stayed in French-speaking Switzerland and England before starting to work in his father's business. He received power of attorney in 1863 and in 1869 became co-owner of the business and successor to his father.

Oskar Merkel also became a member of the Citizens 'Committee, the People's Party, the Esslinger Liederkranz, of which he was also a member of the board, President of the Swabian Singers' Association , Privy Councilor of Commerce and honorary citizen of the city of Esslingen. In 1907 the Merkel swimming pool he donated was inaugurated. It was built between 1905 and 1907 based on designs by Hans Meyer from Gießen . Oskar Merkel also had the Alicensteg over the Neckar, named after one of his daughters, built. This iron pedestrian walkway was designed and built in the Esslingen machine factory and given to the city as a gift in 1891.

On September 4, 1860, Oskar Merkel married Julie Weiß, the daughter of Carl Jakob Christian Weiß and Luise Henriette Weiß, geb. Cheneaux. The bond between these two families was further strengthened in this generation by another marriage; In 1865 Julie Weiß 'older brother August and Julie Merkel, a sister of Oskar Merkel, married.
