Ostenwalde (oil field)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ostenwalde oil field is a former oil production area near the town of Ostenwalde in Hümmling in the Emsland district of Lower Saxony . The oil was transported via the Hümmlinger Kreisbahn , which means that the oil field has also had a major impact on the development of the railway line.

The oil field

The Ostenwalde oil field was proven by an exploration well in 1953 and from June 19 the first oil was driven off by tank wagons. The narrow-gauge line was enormously promoted by the oil produced. The change of gauge to standard gauge, which was planned in the twenties, was pushed ahead and an oil loading track was set up.

After the peak of oil production around 1960, the production rate fell steadily. In 1995 the field was finally given up because of the poor world market prices and the ever decreasing production. The loading tracks and facilities were removed as early as 1996 and the site was renatured.

The total output was 456,342 t. The field was developed with 44 production wells and extracted the oil from the layers of the Malm . The trapping structures running in these strata collected the oil produced in the Wealden and Dogger strata .
