History and description

As early as the 15th century, there was a small storage pond in Ostergrund in the area of today's Easter pond. In connection with mining in the area, it served as a drive for a stamping mill for crushing minerals and metals. In 1669, today's Osterteich was created by building a dam in order to operate a stronger hammer mill. The work began in 1668 and the final completion took place in 1671. In the vicinity there were tunnels driven horizontally into the mountains, in which ore was extracted. Some of the tunnels' mouth holes were below the water level of the pond. In addition, the abundance of fish in the pond was used. In the middle of the 18th century the deposits were exhausted and mining was stopped. Later attempts at resuscitation failed. The hammer mill was converted into a watermill , the Ostergrundmühle , in 1713 . At the same time, the dam was raised and the Ostergrundstollen flooded. In 1750, Prince Viktor Friedrich acquired the mill.

The dike was destroyed during a storm in 1789. The mill was swept away and the cellars, fields and meadows flooded.

At the end of World War II, German troops sank weapons and ammunition in the Osterteich. After extensive clean-up work, the Easter pond was later released as bathing water. In 1965 the dam was raised again and the old water mill was torn down. In 1977 the Osterteich forest pool by the pond was opened. Another reconstruction took place in 1984. A concrete overflow was built. In 1992 a parking lot was created north of the pond. A further expansion of the Easter pond was made in 1994. Because of the harsh winter of 2006, an ice festival was celebrated on February 4, 2006 on the frozen pond.
