Viktor Friedrich von Anhalt-Bernburg (born September 20, 1700 in Bernburg ; † May 18, 1765 ibid) from the house of the Ascanians , was the ruling prince of the state of Anhalt-Bernburg .

Life

Viktor Friedrich was the son of Prince Karl Friedrich (1668–1721) from his marriage to Sophie Albertine (1672–1708), daughter of Count Georg Friedrich zu Solms-Sonnenwalde . The prince undertook his grand tour to France in 1717/18 and followed his father as prince in 1721. The homage took place in 1723. As Rittmeister and Captain of the Prussian Army, he received the Order of the Black Eagle in 1722 .

Viktor Friedrich showed particular interest in mining and metallurgy, so he often visited the mines in the Harz Mountains. From 1724 he was in sole possession of the Harz mines - the Victor-Friedrich-Silberhütte was named after him - and the silver mining gained importance. The prince acquired numerous goods to enlarge the domain property. He initiated a cameralistic economic policy aimed at the internal development of the country. Under him, the development of the principality into an early modern absolutist territorial state was completed. Increasing financial, tax and economic burdens on the population, restrictions on local self-government and the burdens of princely hunting in the country led to unrest from 1751 onwards. They escalated into a serious political revolt in 1752/53, which could only be overcome through the use of the military and partial concessions.

From 1755 Viktor Friedrich was senior in the house of Anhalt.

In his residence in Bernburg Viktor Friedrich built the government building in 1745 and the church on the mountain in 1752. He promoted the infrastructure and tried unsuccessfully with the planting of mulberry trees for sericulture . Due to financial pressure after the outbreak of the Seven Years War , the country ran into considerable debt.

Marriages and offspring

Viktor Friedrich married Luise (1709–1732), daughter of Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau , on November 25, 1724, in Dessau Palace . The young princess died a month after giving birth to her only child. On May 22, 1733 Victor Friedrich married Albertine (1712–1750), daughter of Margrave Albrecht Friedrich von Brandenburg-Schwedt, in Potsdam for the second time . Only two months after the death of his second wife, he concluded a third ( morganatic marriage ) with Constanze Schmidt on November 13, 1750 . In 1752 she gave birth to a daughter and was then raised to the nobility by the prince with the title of Baer .
