The Victor-Friedrich-Silberhütte is a former iron and steel works in the district of Silberhütte belonging to the town of Harzgerode in Saxony-Anhalt . The few remaining structural remains of the hut and a memorial plaque are under monument protection .

location

It is located on the banks of the Selke in the Selketal at the western exit of Silberhütte. Today the Selke Valley Railway runs south of the hut area . The hut is registered as a steelworks in the local register of monuments. Immediately to the west of the hut is the also listed Hüttenmeisterhaus .

Design and history

In 1693, the silver smelter was founded by Prince Wilhelm von Anhalt-Bernburg-Harzgerode to enable the smelting of the ores mined in the vicinity. One used this hydropower of the Selke. The later name of the hut refers to Prince Viktor Friedrich von Anhalt-Bernburg . At the beginning of the 19th century, the company was rebuilt and largely renewed. A cast-iron memorial plaque preserved on site today reminds of the renovation in 1825 by Duke Alexius Friedrich Christian von Anhalt-Bernburg with the inscription VICTOR FRIEDRICHS SILBERHUETTE / RENEWED BY / HERZOG ALEXIUS FRIEDRICH CHRISTIAN / IN THE YEAR MDCCCXXV . This year, in addition to silver , the only gold and selenium found in the Harz were smelted in the smelter.

In 1909, however, the hut ceased operations. Wood processing companies settled on the smelter site , which were shut down in 1990. The Unterharzer Waldhof was built on the western part of the hut area .
