Friederike Auguste Sophie, Princess of Anhalt-Zerbst , born Princess of Anhalt-Bernburg (born August 28, 1744 in Bernburg , † April 12, 1827 in Coswig ) was a German princess and sister-in-law of Tsarina Catherine II of Russia (1729–1796 ). She administered the Jever inheritance from April 1793 to October 1806 .

Life

Friederike Auguste Sophie is the third daughter of Viktor Friedrich von Anhalt-Bernburg (1700–1765) and Albertine von Brandenburg-Schwedt (1712–1750). On May 22, 1764, she married her relative Friedrich August, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst (1734–1793), brother of the Russian Tsarina, at Ballenstedt Castle in the Harz Mountains . Because of a political rift with Prussia, the Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst had not been able to reside in his territory since 1758.

After staying in various health resorts, the royal couple arrived in Basel in February 1765 . Here they lived in the Mitzsche house on Petersgraben and, as a summer residence, the Weiherschloss Groß-Gundeldingen . The princess kept in close contact with contemporary Basel personalities such as Isaak Iselin (1728–1782) and Peter Ochs (1752–1821). The latter dedicated the first volume of his “History of the City and Landscape of Basel” (1786) to her.

While her husband left the city on the Rhine in 1780 due to disputes with the magistrate for Luxembourg , the Princess of Anhalt-Zerbst did not leave until August 1791 after 26 years of exile. In Jever she learned of her husband's death in March 1793 and a few weeks later of the state administration that had been entrusted to her . She performed this post with prudence and zeal for reform until the Jeverland was occupied by Napoleonic troops in October 1806.

After her abdication, Friederike retired to Coswig Castle , where she spent the remaining years with her sister Christine von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen (1746–1823). She died childless on April 12, 1827.
