Ostfriesland-Wanderweg is the name of a regional hiking trail of the Wiehengebirgsverband Weser-Ems . With a length of around 97 kilometers, it is the longest and oldest hiking trail in East Frisia. The level of difficulty of the path is easy, as there is hardly any incline to be mastered. In total, hikers master a height difference of 12 meters on the route, which is laid out for four to five day's marches.

The hiking trail runs partly on the route of the former Leer – Aurich – Wittmund small railway and is a section of the European long-distance hiking trail E9 . This was shut down on December 31, 1969. In the following years the track systems were removed. The former route was expanded at the end of the 1970s as an Ostfrieslandwanderweg , on which the Ossiloop , a fun run, is held every year . The path is signposted and marked with a white "O" on a black background.

course

The Ostfriesland hiking trail is exactly 92.76 km long. It leads from the center of Rhauderfehn via Ihrhove to Leer. From there it goes via Hesel, Großefehn and Holtrop to Aurich. This 41-kilometer section is also part of the European long-distance hiking trail E9. From Aurich, the route runs 29 kilometers on the route of the former small railroad via Esens to Bensersiel, which is located directly on the coast. There it ends at the ferry port to Langeoog directly on the North Sea at Bürgermeister-Rieken-Platz.

On the old small railway line, which now looks like a double wall hedge, walkers cross all the landforms of the East Frisian mainland, i.e. the Emsmarsch, the adjacent high moors, the Geest with its forests and hedgerows and the marches on the North Sea.

Sculptures on the hiking trail

In the Aurich district of Sandhorst, the path crosses the East Friesland equator. The Aurich district adult education center set up a gate as part of a youth project . World icon

Along the way there are 24 scouring stake sculptures that were created by artists from northern Germany and the Netherlands between May and November 2011. The idea for this came from the former head of the Aurich vocational schools, Gerd Neumann. Scrubbing posts are set up to protect the boundaries of the pasture from damage by the cattle, since in the absence of other options, such as trees, they could rub against them and kink them in the process. Instead of these, cattle and horses can scratch the posts in the meadow. There are no regulations for the appearance and position of rub stakes and they do not require any approval.
