The Ossiloop is a running event in East Frisia that extends over three weeks in May each year.

history

The stage run was launched in 1982 by Klaus Beyer (died 2012) from SV Holtland as a stage run from “Leer bis ans Meer” to life and organized by him for 25 years. Since the 26th Ossiloop in 2007, the Ossiloop has been organized under the organizational direction of Edzard Wirtjes from Fortuna Logabirum. The name comes from the jokingly used term "Ossi" for East Frisians . “Loop”, on the other hand, is the Low German term for “run”.

The run is completed in six stages, which are run on Tuesdays and Fridays. The route is 64.7 kilometers in total, with sections ranging from 9.8 to 11.9 kilometers. The most popular route is the Ostfriesland hiking trail , the former route of the Leer – Aurich – Wittmund small railway . The direction of travel changes between the Julianenpark in Leer (start) or the monument square in Leer (finish) and the port gate of the east pier in Bensersiel (start / finish). In 2007, individual electronic timekeeping took place for the first time using the ChampionChip system.

The Ossiloop has grown from its humble beginnings into a recognized major event. In 2017 over 3,029 runners started, of which almost 2,429 completed all six stages. In addition to numerous recreational runners, runners from the East Frisian and foreign running elite are also represented. In the meantime, the event has also found its echo in the national press. In addition, the Ossiloop forms the framework for the crime thriller “Der Etappenmörder” (re-released in 2006 under the title “Death runs with”) by Peter Gerdes .

Stages

Until 2009 the run took place "from Leer to the sea". In 2010 the race took place in the opposite direction for the first time (starting in Bensersiel and finishing in Leer). The reason for this is the weather in Bensersiel, which often prevented a graduation ceremony. As a result, the last stage was extended to 13.6 kilometers and is only slightly shorter than the queen stage, which was shortened a little. The finish line was moved to the monument square in the center of Leer. A vote in September 2010 among the participants in 2009 and 2010, who ran in both directions, resulted in the desire for an annual change of direction.

  • 3rd stage (mill stage): Bagband - Holtrop (11.9 kilometers)

The biggest change in the route took place in 2003, when the destination of the 2nd stage was moved from Bagband to Stikelkamp to Gut Stikelkamp. The routing of the stages is otherwise largely unchanged.

The second stage has been named "Klaus Beyer Stage" in memory of the initiator of the run since 2009. On the king's stage, the longest stage of the Ossiloops, you cross the East Frisian equator ( ). The fifth stage mainly leads through a green tunnel. World icon
