The East Korea Bay ( Korean : 동 조선 만 , Tongjosŏn-man ) is a bay of the Sea of Japan in the northeast of the Korean Peninsula .
It runs along the North Korean provinces of Hamgyŏng-namdo and Kangwŏn-do with the port cities of Wŏnsan and Hamhŭng - Hŭngnam . The limits are the 38th parallel ( demilitarized zone ) in the south and the city of Kimch'aek in the north.
The name East Korea Bay is mainly used by North Korea, which regards the entire bay as its territorial waters , but this is not recognized internationally. North Korea underpins its claims with reference to an alleged historical existence of the bay name; in fact, the term is probably a modern name creation.
On the opposite side of the peninsula is the Korean Bay .
