Ostmann Tower
The Ostmannturm is a 34-meter former water tower in Bielefeld , Hanns-Bisegger-Straße 7 ( district center ). With its copper spire, it is one of the city's landmarks and gives its name to the Ostmann tower district . The tower is integrated into a three-storey factory building, the building complex was also called "Schlachterkirche" and later "Pfefferkirche" after its different uses. Today it is used as a student residence and is a listed building .
history
The factory building with water tower was built between 1912 and 1914 as the "slaughterhouse" or meat product factory of the Bielefelder Konsumverein . The consumer association was dissolved by the National Socialists in 1938. The building came into the possession of the Ostmann spice company, which operated several spice mills there until 1978 .
The then industrial district was converted into a residential area as part of an urban redevelopment program. The tower is the only remaining evidence of the formerly dense commercial development.
The Bielefelder Freemaurer eV welfare organization acquired the six-story building from the city of Bielefeld and converted it into a student residence in 1980.
